Balearic Islands increases its market share in 2022
In the charter market, three out of every ten registrations are accounted for the Balearics

A total of 1,080 recreational vessels have been registered in the Balearic Islands in 2022, representing a slight decrease of 6.25% compared to the previous year, when the figure amounted to 1,152 registrations, according to data collected in the "Annual Market Report of Recreational Vessels 2022", edited by ANEN from data provided by the Directorate General of Merchant Marine.

However, the sharper decline of 14.9% in Spain in general this period has led to a relatively bigger market share for the Balearics, closing 2022 with a slice of 18.47% of the national total, slightly above 16.76% recorded in December 2021. The province with the second highest percentage of registrations over the national total is Barcelona, with 10.4%, followed by Girona, with 6.89%.

But where the performance of the Balearic nautical sector really shines is in the charter market, where registrations have experienced a strong growth of 28.09% to reach 611 units, compared to 477 at the end of 2021. In this segment, the Balearic Islands have gone from 24.6% to 31.13% of the total nationwide registrations.

By market share, Girona is the province in second place in the charter market with 9.68%, followed by Alicante, with 8.81%. In Spain as a whole, charter boat registrations have grown by 1.2% to 1,963 units.

"The nautical sector has remained stable throughout the year, despite the economic context and the logistics crisis, with special mention to the improvement in the data of recreational boat registrations in the last quarter, both in the overall market and in the nautical charter," analyzes Carlos Sanlorenzo, secretary general of ANEN. "These are data that reflect the good positioning of the nautical tourism and the appetite of society for boating as a way to enjoy leisure time. This reinforces the potential of the nautical sector as a driver of tourism 'made in Spain' in an economic climate for 2023 that looks complex, a situation to which the nautical market is no stranger," he concludes.
